Police praised for curbing vehicle smuggling

On Wednesday, Zikalala visited Jozini as part of the provincial government October Transport Month programme

INGWAVUMA police told the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environment Affairs, Sihle Zikalala that drastic measures, which were put in place to prevent stolen vehicles from being smuggled across the border to Mozambique, are bearing fruit.

On Wednesday, Zikalala visited Jozini as part of the provincial government October Transport Month programme.

Ingwavuma Station Commander, Colonel Masuku confirmed that the smuggling of stolen vehicles from the area to Mozambique has been curbed.

‘The deployment of a special anti-vehicle smuggling police unit, comprising members drawn from different parts of the country, had helped the local police to stop car hijacking syndicates,’said Masuku.

Zikalala welcomed the positive news and commended the police for their hard work, adding it was a major boost for the tourism industry and communities, which had been severely affected by car hijacking syndicates.

‘We are extremely happy our law agencies have managed to curb car hijacking syndicates from smuggling cars into Mozambique.

‘We thank central government who worked closely with the provincial government to deal with this problem,’ said Zikalala.

President Zuma visited the area earlier this year and made a commitment that government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that syndicates were stopped.

‘The success we have scored in such a short space of time is a clear indication that government is serious about protecting the country’s citizens,’ he said

As part of the October Transport Month programme, Zikalala also participated in a road block at Bhambanana where he interacted with passengers and motorists.
