Bogus traditional healer behind bars for theft

On Friday, Ulundi police arrested, Abu Bukali Nsamba (30) from Uganda and charged him for theft by false pretence after he allegedly robbed his victim an amount of about R48 000

POLICE have warned the community to refrain from entertaining bogus traditional healers after a woman was robbed off her hard-earned money in the Ulundi area.

On Friday, Ulundi police arrested, Abu Bukali Nsamba (30) from Uganda and charged him for theft by false pretence after he allegedly robbed his victim an amount of about R48 000.

Captain Nkosie Gwala said that Nsamba, who claimed to be traditional healer, allegedly lured his victim by saying her ancestors want to give her R14-million, but the ancestors demanded she first pays him a sum of R150 000, in return for which she would be rewarded with riches.

Gwala said that on Friday, 20 October, the victim went to pay him an amount of R48 000 and on the arrival the suspect gave his victim a locked safe and said it has R75 000 inside and said he could not give her all the money because the safe was too small, but promised later to give her the rest of the money.

‘The victim told us that after that she received information that this traditional healer is criminal and had robbed various people, she went to report the matter to the police.

‘Our detectives started their investigation and on Friday, 27 October he was arrested in the Ulundi CBD.

‘During the arrest he was asked to open the safe which he had given to the victim and it was discovered there were only fake bank notes amounting to R3 200 on top a stash of blank papers,’said Gwala.

Nsamba appeared in court for a bail application but the matter was postponed until next week Tuesday.

‘As police we want warn the community to be careful when dealing with unknown traditional healers, especially when it involves a lot of money,’ said Gwala.

Local traditional healers, Dr Mabalengwe Ntombela said this was ‘daylight robbery’.

‘People should be warned, they must not allow these criminals calling themselves healers to manipulate and rob them.

‘Such things as ancestors demanding a person to give money to a stranger or healer does not exist. That healer needs to be arrested and sent to jail.’
