Finals day set in stone

WITH just one round of fixtures left before the play-offs, Black Ferns (men) and Mean Machine (ladies) remain unbeaten in the 24th annual McCarthy Toyota Empangeni Touch Rugby League.

Black Ferns were runners-up in last year’s competition, when Bolt Master managed to edge them out in a closely contested final.

But this year, they beat the defending champions in a round robin fixture.

Mean Machine have ended third for the past two seasons, but look favourites to snatch the ladies’ title, after Tiny Bubbles decided to sit out this season.

They have rampaged past all ladies sides, and beaten last year’s runners-up, Purple Ferns twice this season.

Tuesday evening’s fixtures will be the last round before the play-offs scheduled for Thursday evening, which will be determined after the final round played on Tuesday.

Finals day is set for Saturday (4 November) at Mick Kelly Park from 1pm to 5pm.

This year’s competition ran for six weeks and saw teams scoring a number of sensational tries.

‘We lost two weeks’ worth of fixtures this year, due to the poor weather but I managed to fit those fixtures in with double-headers to catch-up,’ said tournament organiser Dagwood van Vuuren.
