September shipping statistics for the Port of Richards Bay

Total cargo handled in September in Richards Bay reached well into the millions of tonnes

A BREAKDOWN of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) shipping statistics for September reveals the extent of the Port of Richards Bay’s activity, with total cargo handled reaching well into the millions of tonnes.

Total bulk cargo handled in September at the Port of Richards Bay amounted to 9 300 973 tonnes, with the bulk of this figure coming from the shipment of bulk cargo from Richards Bay, while bulk cargo to land on our shores was 609 753 tonnes.

Total break bulk landed in Richards Bay amounted to just 1 541 tonnes, while break bulk shipped from our port totalled 119 024 tonnes.

Total cargo handled amounted to 9 421 543 tonnes, broken down into 611 294 tonnes landing at the Port of Richards Bay and 8 809 062 tonnes having been shipped from our shores.

Measured in TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), the total number of containers that were handled at the Port of Richards Bay in September amounted to 1 389.

Just 290 containers landed in Richards Bay, while 1 099 were shipped.

These figures can be further broken down into the landing of 275 empty containers and 15 full, while 1 098 full containers were shipped from Richards Bay, with the shipment of only one empty one.

Three ocean-going general cargo vessels entered the Port of Richards Bay in September, carrying 93 682 tonnes of cargo in total.

Total ocean-going bulk vessels to enter Richards Bay was 117, carrying a total of 5 582 226 tonnes.

Three ocean-going containers vessels – all non-cellular – entered Richards Bay, carrying a total of 67 301 tonnes.

Nine oil tankers, five chemical tankers and two LPG tankers entered the Port of Richards Bay, carrying 208 887 tonnes, 83 156 tonnes and 94 114 tonnes respectively.

While these vessels contributed to the number of vessels, both ocean-going and coastwise, entering the Port of Richards Bay in September, the grand total was 142, with the total gross tonnage to enter our shores by vessel in September amounting to 6 238 329.
