Calm restored at Mzingazi

Police will continue to monitor the area

‘THE situation in Mzingazi is calm and there are no longer any crowds gathering. The road to and from the suburb has been cleared and cars are moving freely again,’ reported Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Captain Debbie Ferreira on Monday afternoon.

This after protesters once again brought Mzingazi and surrounding areas to a standstill on Monday morning, blocking roads with burning tyres and tree branches.

Commuters and learners were left standing on the sides of the road with no transportation, as cars were prevented from travelling in and out of the area.

The protest mirrors one that occurred last Monday where the main road through Mzingazi, leading to Richards Bay Minerals was blockaded.

Community members had demonstrated in anger over a number of issues, among them the lack of job opportunities and various service delivery problems.

During an Imbizo held at Nzalabantu Sports Ground on Sunday to discuss issues within the community, King Cetshwayo District Mayor Cllr Nonhle Mkhulisi pleaded with residents not to allow strikes to affect learners.

The mayor urged residents not to ‘hold back learners at such a very crucial time’.

Mkhulisi said, as matriculants sit down to write their final exams this week, they should be supported by the entire community.

Police will continue to monitor the area.
