King Cetshwayo District females dominate matric exam enrollments

There are 85 299 full-time females, 68 325 full-time males, 24 126 part-time females and 15 845 part-time male candidates

THE King Cetshwayo District has the largest number of female learners in KZN enrolled to write the 2017 matric exams from Monday.

This was revealed in the provincial state of readiness report for the 2017 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

This year close to 198 000 candidates have registered for the exams in the province.

The majority of the candidates are female learners.

‘There are 85 299 full-time females, 68 325 full-time males, 24 126 part-time females and 15 845 part-time male candidates.

‘The district with the largest female enrollment is King Cetshwayo,’ the KZN Department of Education said.

The Zululand district recorded the highest male enrollment for progressed candidates (passing through to Grade 12 learners who failed Grade 11 twice), with 1 481.

The NSC exams will begin on Monday and finish on 28 November.

After a two-year decline in matric results in 2014 and 2015, the province succeeded in halting the decline last year.

The King Cetshwayo District achieved a 63% pass rate in 2016.

‘We expect great things from our class of 2017, more especially from districts that have let us down in the past in terms of performance,’ the Department of Education said.

MEC for education in the province, Mthandeni Dlungwana, earlier said: ‘We approach the 2017 NSC examinations with a greater sense of confidence following last year’s improvement.

‘Our focus is very clear. We want nothing less than a 76% overall pass rate in 2017.

‘We urge our communities to support learners by creating the right environment for proper study throughout the examination time. Parents at home should take an interest in the studies of their children at all times.’
