Perfect miniatures of nature’s best
The Zululand Bonsai Society wants to raise more interest in the art of bonsai
THE Zululand Bonsai Society on Saturday held its first bonsai expo, which is set to become an annual event.
From 9am to 2pm outside Town Square Builders Warehouse, members of the public were treated to bonsai demonstrations by club member Gora Khaki, while club secretary Celia Gericke put her excellent bonsai skills to the test as she re-potted, pruned and gave fresh soil to visitors’ plants.
A collection of the club members’ most exquisite bonsai trees were on display, including club treasurer Ronnie Gericke’s 25-year-old Acacia Karoo (sweet thorn); a perfect miniature.

‘Many years ago, bonsai expos were held regularly, but lately not for some time,’ said Gericke.
‘As a club, we hope to raise more interest in the art of bonsai by holding these expos annually.’
Zululand Bonsai Society has been going officially for ten years, but club members have been involved in the art for much longer.
New members are always welcome to join the club, which meets on the second Saturday of each month.
