Shoebox project calling for pledges
After exceeding 650 000 shoeboxes in 2016, the project is aiming to collect 110 000 boxes this year and increase it over the next two years to reach their one million target

IN Zululand, organisers of the annual Santa Shoebox Project are aiming to collect at least 500 boxes towards this year’s countrywide target of 110 000.
The annual Santa Shoebox Project is on a mission to reach one million underprivileged children by 2019.
Locally, organisers are aiming to meet their target and appealing to the community to pledge towards the initiative.
After exceeding 650 000 shoeboxes in 2016, the project is aiming to collect 110 000 boxes this year and increase it over the next two years to reach their one million target.
Originating in Cape Town the project, which distributes boxes filled with toiletries, school supplies, clothing and toys, has grown over the years from a humble 180 boxes in 2006.
The boxes are distributed to more than 1 000 recipient facilities, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia and the success of the project is largely attributed to its personal nature as donors give gifts to children whose names, ages and genders are known.
In Zululand, donors are hard at work with pledges and drop off points are available in Richards Bay and Empangeni where boxes can be delivered in time for the year end distribution.
The boxes should contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, facecloth, soap, toy, outfit of clothing, school supplies and sweets.
Those interested in pledging can contact Trudie on 076 8102992 or Deidre on 071 3308382.
Drops off points for boxes will be held in Richards Bay on 27 and 28 October at 11 Canturbury Bell Street, Veldenvlei and 3 and 4 November at St Catherine’s School in Empangeni at 13 Higgs Road.
