Strike leaves commuters stranded

Timber trucks were also used to block a number of routes into and out of the township, forcing motorists to turn back

THE main road through Mzingazi, leading to Richards Bay Minerals, was blocked with burning tyres and rubbish on Monday morning owing to a strike which left a number of commuters stranded.

The area was on lock-down with no vehicles able to travel in and out of the area as community members took to the streets over a number of issues, among them the lack of job opportunities and various other service delivery issues including electricity provision.

Timber trucks were also used to block a number of routes into and out of the township, forcing motorists to turn back.

Some schools in the area were also forced to allow learners to return home as not enough teachers were able to make it to work.

The strike had a domino effect with businesses in and around Richards Bay as employees were unable to travel to their places of employment.

These issues are expected to be discussed in a meeting at eNzalabantu this coming Sunday.
