THE King Cetshwayo District Municipality continued the roll out of its R32-million sanitation project in ward 6 of the uMlalazi Municipality.
The construction of the 500 VIP double pit units started on 1 August and the expected completion date is 31 May next year.
It is estimated that uMlalazi has a backlog of 9 600 households requiring sanitation in five wards.
The backlog will be reduced in a phased approach, with a minimum of 350 units constructed per ward from the 2017/18 budget allocation.
A total of 1 700 households will be assisted this financial year.
As part of local community development, the implementation strategy includes the transportation of materials from the storing site to each household by local contractors.
Eight local contractors are to be appointed for the construction of the toilets.
Sub-contractors will be given basic on-the-job training in supervision and project management.
All labour will be sourced locally and they will receive basic training in building and bricklaying.
