Paddlers brave strong winds

A total of 30 double and 10 single skis took part under the watchful eye of the NSRI, with the top paddlers coming close to the course record

THE powerful south-wester at the backs of paddlers saw good times recorded by the winners of the 2017 Mouth to Mouth Surfski Challenge on Saturday.

Hosted by the Zululand Kayak Club and sponsored by Mondi, Nashua Zululand, mPact and Downwind, the wind direction saw the start take place at Mtunzini and the finish at Pelican Island in Richards Bay, a distance of close to 40km. A total of 30 double and 10 single skis took part under the watchful eye of the NSRI, with the top paddlers coming close to the course record.

Doubles men – 1 Gene Prato/Luke Nisbet (Durban) 2hrs 30min 57sec; 2 Bret Hadiraris/Keegan Kruger (Toti) 2.34.57; 3 Jason Ekstrand/Richard Lowe (Durban) 2.37.

Late finisher Brian Heathfield looks fresh enough to do the return trip
