uMhlathuze Municipality ‘reworking’ CCTV project
City spokesperson Mdu Ncalane told the ZO the municipality is reworking the CCTV project to improve its functionality compared to the previous CCTV project that was halted

THE City of uMhlathuze has responded to police calls for CCTV camera systems in the area.
City spokesperson Mdu Ncalane told the ZO the municipality is reworking the CCTV project to improve its functionality compared to the previous CCTV project that was halted.
The ZO last week reported on calls for such a system to aid SAPS and crime intelligence in combatting crime in the city.
According to reports Business Against Crime obtained funds from large companies almost 10 years ago, which were handed over to the municipality for the implementation of CCTV camera systems.
These were installed, but never monitored and have since become outdated.
According to a source, the previous cameras were installed without a proper environmental impact assessment (EIA) being conducted to take into consideration the coastal, humid climate that we experience and how this would affect the cameras.
Residents expressed mixed emotions on social media regarding the issue.
Angie Lovick wrote: ‘An investigation is in order to find out what happened to the funds that was given for this project.’
Bongani Masuku said that it would be great initiative.
‘This project was put on hold a few years ago with Business Against Crime waiting for the extra funds from the municipality. Would have been a great initiative to help combat crime in our area,’ wrote Simon Rollo.
