PERSONAL trainer Fanele Mnguni is teaching children in Zululand how to stay fit and live a healthy lifestyle.

Mnguni, who has been a fitness trainer for three years and holds a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science from the University of Zululand, has set up a Fitness Healthy Lifestyle Bootcamp that will run every Saturday at uMhlathuze Sports Complex.

The programme coaches kids between the age of 8 and 16 on strength, flexibility, healthy eating and stimulating the process of weight loss.

With the growing rate of obesity in young children in the country, Mnguni said it vital for young people to have knowledge of how to take care of themselves.

‘Obesity is one of the biggest scourges in the country and we rank second in the world, which is a big concern.

‘Especially with young people who often make the wrong choices so we need to therefore start training our bodies in order to keep our minds fit and in turn make the right health choices,’ Mnguni said.

According to reports in 2016, four girls and one in five boys between the ages of 2 and 14 years are overweight or obese while obesity-related diseases such as heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers account for 43% of deaths in South Africa.
