THE ever increasing teenage pregnancy rate among schoolgirls has prompted the City of uMhlathuze’s Youth Council to speak out on the issue..
At the launch of the Transnet teenage health programme held at Nongweleza High School, Isigisi Reserve, last week, Youth Council Chairperson Sphelele Gumede said they were concerned about the the alarming rate of teenagers becoming pregnant while still at school.
‘The main reason why you are here today is to educate yourself, to become better people tomorrow. You are expected to produce excellent results in your studies, not babies,’ he told the youth present..
Gumede said it pained him to see the youth of today paying little attention to their studies and focusing on trivial things.
He said he was disturbed that government’s effort to make condoms available at schools as a means to promote protected sex, was not bearing fruit.
‘I don’t think it is fair for us to lay the blame solely on schoolgirls, because they don’t make themselves pregnant. Boys must also take responsibility.’
About 250 learners are part of this three-month programme.
