uMlalazi municipality denies bankruptcy claims

uMlalazi Municipality disputes allegations of bankruptcy

THE uMlalazi Municipality disputes the Inkatha Freedom Party’s (IFP) allegations that the municipality is bankrupt.

Municipal Communications Manager, Mkhuseli Buthelezi, confirmed that all employees would be paid at the end of the month.

The municipality apologised to all employees for the possible inconvenience the allegations might have caused.

In a statement released on Monday, the IFP called for a thorough forensic investigation into the management of municipal funds after reports that the municipality is bankrupt.

IFP KZN provincial spokesperson on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Princess Phumzile Buthelezi, called for the investigation after employees, in reaction to the rumours, feared their salaries would not be paid.

In response, the municipality said its budget was approved by Council on 30 May and is ‘fully funded’.

The municipality gave the assurance it had sufficient cash resources to maintain all its operations and pay all workers.

‘The source of the allegations remains unknown, as we only got to learn about these claims through the media,’ said Buthelezi.

Princess Buthelezi said: ‘The Chief Financial Officer and the Municipal Manager must answer and be held accountable for this mess. It is not fair for the people of uMlalazi to be kept in the dark over their sinking municipality.’

The IFP called on the KZN Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube to put the uMlalazi Municipality under provisional administration.
