Surprised mum is blessed times four

Three little princesses and a prince safely delivered

QUADRUPLETS born on Wednesday morning are receiving critical care at the Lower uMfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital in Empangeni.

Jabulile Sangweni (30) from eDumbe who gave birth at Vryheid hospital, thought she was carrying one child but was shocked when she delivered three girls and one boy.

‘Around 4am my water broke and I called an ambulance. When I got to the hospital the nurse told me I was carrying four babies. I was really surprised because I thought I was carrying only one child.

‘I had attended antenatal classes at eDumbe mobile clinic when I was eight months pregnant. They told me I was only having one child,’ a visibly exhausted Sangweni said.

The first baby, the only boy, was delivered at 8am, weighing 1370g. The second (880g) arrived at 8.05am; the third (940g) at 8.10am, and the last girl (1100g) made her entrance into the world at 8.25am.

They were transferred to the maternity hospital in Empangeni on Thursday.

Jabulile, who already has one child, said despite the surprise, she is elated at being blessed four times over.

‘My mother has twins, a boy and a girl, and it came as a surprise to her when I told her I just gave birth to four children.

She says the father of the children was just as shocked.

‘I am unemployed and he relies on temp jobs in Johannesburg. So when I called him he couldn’t even speak,’ she said.

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo commended professional nurse at Vryheid, Simphiwe Nomali Buthelezi and her team for safely delivering the babies.

‘A surprise of quadruplets in a district hospital being so well-managed is a miracle. We wish both the mother and the babies a good life,’ Dhlomo said.

He further urged pregnant mothers in the province to start antenatal care early.

‘It is a miracle that the mother was able to deliver the quadruplets without incident,’ said Dr Dhlomo.
