Richards Bay’s hobo house to be monitored by municipality
The half-built house in Richards Bay is owned by former SASSA CEO Thokozani Magwaza
MEERENSEE’S notorious half-built house, known as the ‘hobo house’, remains in a state of squalor, although the City of uMhlathuze has agreed to undertake regular inspections in an attempt to rid the property of unsavoury and criminal elements.
The municipality last week confirmed the property’s rates and taxes were up-to-date, and that the owner, former SASSA CEO Thokozani Magwaza, has begun building a perimeter wall.
The area’s ward councillor, Christo Botha, is in possession of written confirmation of the municipality’s undertaking to conduct monthly inspections of the premises.
Further, the municipality conducted a site inspection early last week and confirmed the owner has initiated a process to complete construction of the house.

He has also had a boundary wall built, but is yet to erect gates.
Meanwhile, the interior of the half-built house remains in a state of squalor, littered with all kinds of rubbish.
It also remains a refuge to vagrants who are making use of the facilities, despite there being no plumbing or water for toilet usage.
The stench is evident from outside the premises, which in itself is fast becoming a health concern for the rest of the neighbourhood.
The swimming pool also remains cesspit, with all kinds of litter floating in the green, untreated water.
