John Ross collapse enquiry continues
On Monday the ZO revealed that a Richards Bay resident had three weeks ago taken a DoT member to the very some spot at which the sinkhole formed on Friday afternoon

THE KZN Department of Transport (DoT) is investigating allegations that a DoT member had been made aware of the problems concerning a section of the John Ross Parkway which collapsed last week.
On Monday the ZO revealed that a Richards Bay resident had three weeks ago taken a DoT member to the very some spot at which the sinkhole formed on Friday afternoon.
Lourens Basson told the ZO he raised concerns over the rising water levels of the adjacent stream as well as the blocking of the pipe which runs underneath the road.
He had also reportedly taken traffic officials to the site.
The allegations were put to KZN DoT spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane, who responded:
‘We have launched an internal investigation regarding the allegations of one of our members having been made aware of the issues surround the John Ross.
‘We do not want to point fingers but rather work to ensure that the road is reconstructed as soon as possible and that it is done properly/
‘In the meantime we urge motorists to abide by the rules of the road and remain patient while we attend to the reconstruction.
‘We also want to urge companies to be patient with us at this time.
‘We understand that production at many companies has been affected as a result of the construction on the road. We have estimated that the road will be reopened in 10 weeks,’ said Ncalane.
He further noted the DoT will be embarking on an assessment of all major roads in the province, starting with the John Ross Parkway.
‘We have already identified other sections of the John Ross which need attention.
‘This will form part of a provincial campaign to ensure that our roads are maintained,’ he said.
Since the reopening of the road on Monday morning, Zululanders have not reported many issues, besides a slight delay in travel time.
Motorists are still being urged to use the alternative route (N2/R619) to and from Richards Bay to lessen congestion on the John Ross.
