THE National Chairperson of the Social Development Portfolio Committee, Zoleka Capa, says the distribution of government social grants will not address the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
People must rather be encouraged to produce food and feed themselves, thereby ensuring food security.
During her visit to the uThungulu fresh produce market last week, Capa told the ZO that the nation cannot afford to have people who depend entirely on the government for their survival.
Capa was accompanied by members of the National Assembly and KZN Legislature on an oversight visit.
‘We came here to observe how the local fresh produce market was doing, since it was identified by government as an implementing agent for Radical Agrarian Social Economic Transformation (RASET) in the district.’
She said the RASET concept should be the talking point at all community gatherings because it talks about rural people.
‘It is important to ensure food security while stimulating economic development.
‘With RASET we intend building farmer capacity and provide a constant market for fresh produce mainly from small scale producers, co-operatives and individual farmers.
‘I’m impressed with what we see here and this bodes well for rural economic development. We want the government to buy from our beneficiaries. Our four days stay here in KZN has been fruitful.’
