Fruitless search for angler at Cape Vidal

The rocky area of Cape Vidal coupled with rough seas and windy conditions have made search operations for the 41-year-old angler from Verulam, difficult for the various units involved

THE search for the body of the angler who was swept to sea while fishing off rocks at Cape Vidal on Sunday, is drawing to a close.

SAPS Search and Rescue as well as Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife were to meet on Thursday to decide whether to call of the search for ‘Major Diya’, as he was known to family and friends.

The rocky area of Cape Vidal coupled with rough seas and windy conditions have made search operations for the 41-year-old angler from Verulam, difficult for the various units involved.

Despite an extensive sea, shore and air search as well as a rescue operation, no sign of the missing fisherman had been found by 3pm on Sunday afternoon after the search had to be put on hold as rough currents during high tide made for tricky conditions.

A beach patrol was conducted on Monday night by SAPS Search and Rescue Dive Unit but heavy winds combined with sea mist made for more difficult conditions.

Beach patrols were again conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Interchanging northerly and southerly currents have left dive members contemplating as to which direction Diya’s body may have drifted.

Members of his family were present at the scene during the course of the week to assist with the search operations.
