Suspected arsonists torch house
According to home owner, Angelique Frates, her tenant who resides in the cottage next to her house in Appleblaar street woke up in a panic as the thatch roof above his bed was on fire
RESIDENTS in an Arboretum home woke up to their roof on fire at about 3.30am last Wednesday in Richards Bay.
According to home owner, Angelique Frates, her tenant who resides in the cottage next to her house in Appleblaar street woke up in a panic as the thatch roof above his bed was on fire.
He screamed for help and Frates and her fiance, Morné Taylor rushed to the scene where they tried to douse the flames.
Still reeling from shock on Monday, Frates said the property suffered extensive damage and her tenant, Johan Venter lost his furniture and other belongings owing to the fire and the water used to put out the fire.
‘Our neighbours were such a great help, immediately rushing to our aid and assisting to put out the flames.
‘A case of suspected arson was opened and we are appealing to anyone with information, leads or who might have seen some suspicious activity that night, to please contact the police and report it.
‘We are extremely grateful to all the emergency services personnel and police for their speedy and efficient service and believe that it is only by the grace of God that we did not perish in that fire,’ said Frates.
Anyone with information can contact Angelique on 073 4429825 or Morné on 083 7428721.
