Richards Bay model bridge builders head off to finals in Pretoria

The learners look forward to heading to Pretoria for the national round of the competition

THREE learners from Richards Bay Christian School are set to go through to the national round of the SA Institute of Civil Engineers’ (SAICE) bridge building competition, after their bridge withstood a massive 22kg before breaking.

Brothers Landon and Trenton Scott, and fellow learner Michael Harvey, were chuffed with their work and the result, and are looking forward to the national round of the competition in Pretoria later this month.

This annual schools’ competition calls for teams of three learners to build a model bridge with specific materials provided, which is to span a specific distance given by the competition judges.

There are rules regarding the construction method and functional internal and external parameters with which the teams must comply.

Bridges must be built within a given time and no help from teachers or parents is allowed.
