Call for young entrepreneurs to create jobs

We are ready but the youth is not says Khumalo

THE City of uMhlathuze has invited young people residing within its area of jurisdiction to start up small businesses to benefit from the city’s Supply Chain Management (SCM) policy.

Speaking at the Dumisani Makhaye Village Young Entrepreneurs Programme held last week at Wood and Raw Primary School, the city’s Supply Chain Management Unit head, Ntokozo Khumalo, said the youth was not taking advantage of the city’s SCM Policy.

Khumalo said there was a need for entrepreneurs who will create jobs for others.

He said the city’s SCM policy was ‘youth-biased’.

‘Forty percent of our budget is set aside for youth businesses. In this financial year there is an allocation of R83-million.

‘The policy is in place, but the youth is not ready to make use of these opportunities by registering their companies properly. We also wish to educate them on tendering processes.

‘When we advertise jobs, people tend to under-quote or over-quote without doing proper research.

‘We have noted some tendencies where people want to get rich quickly. It does not work that way.

‘Education plays a pivotal role in business. It is imperative to gain proper knowledge about business principles They must also broaden their horizons as entrepreneurs by not only focusing on uMhlathuze.’

Khumalo said the city remained concerned about the high rate of unemployment among young people.

The Young Entrepreneurs Programme was also addressed by Starnford Chirwa of Umhlathuze Net Café, who discussed the topic ‘how to start a business’.

Dumisani Makhaye Village Youth leader Sfundo ‘Ginger’ Mnguni said he was pleased with the information sharing session.

‘This is what we wanted, to empower our youth with information on how to become job creators rather than being job seekers,’ he said.
