Local MP recovering after car crash

Nomalungelo making progress in hospital

LOCAL Member of Parliament (MP) Nomalungelo Gina is lucky to be alive following a car crash which claimed the life of fellow MP Timothy Khoza last week.

Gina, the Chairperson of the Basic Education Portfolio Committee, was travelling with three other MPs – the ANC’s Timothy ‘TZ’ Khoza, the DA’s Ian Ollis and UDM’s Cynthia Majeke – to conduct school oversight visits when their car overturned near Paarl in the Western Cape.

Parliamentary spokesman Moloto Mothapo said Parliament learned with shock of the tragic accident.

Gina and the other two MPs are receiving treatment in hospital.

Gina’s husband, Cedric, said he was grateful to God for saving Nomalungelo’s life.

‘As a family we can only thank the Almighty for ensuring that my wife and the other two MPs survived.

‘I visited her in hospital and she is in a stable condition. She suffered neck injuries, but according to doctors she will recover.’

Gina, an ANC MP from the Musa Dladla Region, was deployed to Parliament in 2009 and appointed as Whip for both the Higher Education and Basic Education portfolio committees.

In 2014 she was appointed as Chairperson of the Basic Education portfolio committee to date.
