New Station Commander unveils plans to rid crime

'What I have come to realise is that the partnerships between Empangeni SAPS, NGOs, private security companies and CPFs are virtually non-existent

EMPANGENI’S new Station Commander Brigadier Jeros Thango (51) has big plans to rid the town of crime something he says is prevalent in the area compared to the previous stations he’s worked at.

Born and raised in Mtubatuba, Thango is well aware of the issues that face the region and especially Empangeni.
Less than a month after being appointed as station commander, Thango has already spearheaded an operation which aims at bringing down the hammer on hijackers and hijacking syndicates in the area.

‘What I have come to realise is that the partnerships between Empangeni SAPS, NGOs, private security companies and CPFs are virtually non-existent.

‘My first priority is to establish a good working relationship with the private security companies in the area to ensure this community is safe and crime free.’

He also made reference to the relationship that Empangeni SAPS needs to establish with the AmaKhosis in the area.

‘The AmaKhosi have a big say in their respective communities. We need to build on a working relationship with them which forms part of our rural safety programmes.

‘I have the full support of the Empangeni SAPS members, the cluster as well as the province, but their support means nothing if we do not have the support of the community. We want to win back their trust and make this town safe again,’ he told the ZO.

Impressive background

Thango started his career with the Mtubatuba SAPS in 1988 before attending Hammanskraal Police College in 1989.

After qualifying from college he was deployed to Kokstad before being transferred back to Mtubatuba.

‘I was stationed at Mtubatuba for more than a decade where I worked in various units,’ he said.

In 2008 Thango was sent to KwaMasane police station as a relief officer. It was there where, through his hard work, he obtained the rank of captain.

In 2009 he was Station Commander at Machadodorp Police Station in Mpumalanga and two years later took up the position of Detective Branch Commander at Elukwatini Police Station, also in Mpumalanga. In 2013 Thango was made full Colonel and Station Commander and acting Cluster Commander at Elukwatini.

In 2014 he was transferred to Piet Retief as Cluster and Station Commander before being deployed to Zululand last month as Empangeni Station Commander.
