SAPS 10111 line operating despite strike
It was 'business as usual' over the weekend as calls to the Empangeni-based 10111 number were speedily answered by members of the Flying Squad

DESPITE the ongoing strike at SAPS 10111 emergency call centres, there have been no reports of service delivery impacts on the public.
It was ‘business as usual’ over the weekend as calls to the Empangeni-based 10111 number were speedily answered by members of the Flying Squad.
The South African Police Service on Friday noted the withdrawal of SAPU (South African Police Union) from CCMA negotiations and the resumption of strike action – and top brass issued a national plea for citizens to stop ‘test’ calling the line to see if it is answered.
They said the contingency plans they have put into place are being put under increased strain as people are calling the number and then hanging up.
‘This places a strain on the queuing system – the number is intended for crime-related emergency purposes,’ said Maj General Sally de Beer.
Meanwhile, they have assured citizens that the contingency plans have been ‘tried and tested’ and that they were successfully implemented during strike action last month.
The strike action is regarded as a protected strike by SAPU affiliated Public Service Act employees at 10111 call centres but ‘no work no pay’ is applicable.
