New spaces for Public Works

Zululand will be receiving new offices for a number of government departments in the new year.

The Department of Public Works in Zululand will be busy early in the new year.

Four new offices are up for tender to be constructed in the Zululand area, each of which should improve service delivery to the community.

Empangeni will be receiving a new Public Protector Justice office. Their role will be to strengthen constitutional democracy by investigating maladministration and abuse of power in state affairs and resolving related disputes to ensure fair, responsive and accountable public sector decision-making and service delivery in the Empangeni area.

Ulundi has a new Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Assault Unit on the cards and it will render services to children and adult victims of family violence and sexual offences. It should be in close proximity to hospitals, courts, social workers and public transport routes and terminals.

Pongola has a new office for the Department of Labour planned. The department plays a role in the reduction of unemployment, poverty and inequality. This is done through a set of policies and programmes aimed at improved economic efficiency and productivity, employment creation, sound labour practices and eliminating inequality and discrimination in the workplace.

Mandeni has a new office on tender for the SA Social Security Agency (SASSA). This is a national agency which administrates the application, approval and payment of social grants. SASSA forms part of the national sphere of government and reports to the Ministry of Social Development. This office has to be located close to public transport routes and must cater for the elderly.

The Richards Bays Rural Development and Reform office is looking for alternative accommodation and this must also be in the CBD inner-city or CBD periphery and has to cater for people with disabilities and the elderly. It is envisaged to be located close to public transport routes and transport terminals.

The Department of Public Works, both national and regional, was contacted to shed more light on the planned developments, but no response was received at the time of going to print.
