Support for underprivileged learners in Gingindlovu

Fifty learners from five primary schools in the Gingindlovu area received full school uniforms thanks to a partnership between Tongaat Hulett and the Nzuza Traditional Council

FIFTY learners from five primary schools in the Gingindlovu area received full school uniforms thanks to a partnership between Tongaat Hulett and the Nzuza Traditional Council.

Among those at the presentation were Inkosi Nzuza and his representatives, Department of Education Circuit Manager Mandla Mabaso, representatives from Simamisa, local sugar cane growers and independent contractors operating in Gingindlovu.

Ten of the most deserving learners from Hemfane, Wombane, Nxenjane, Magumbomane and Vutshini Primary Schools were the delighted recipients on Mandela Day.

Steven Saunders, Director of Tongaat Hulett, said: ‘Mandela Day is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy.

‘It is a worldwide movement admiring his life’s work to change the world for the better and his contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

‘We honour Madiba’s legacy as he positively influenced millions of South Africans and international citizens across the globe, especially children.’

Saunders encouraged the learners to attend school daily.

‘We commend Inkosi Nzuza, his traditional leadership structure and Moses Gumede for their support in making this day a reality and for giving hope to vulnerable learners and families from socially and economically challenged backgrounds,’ said Nkonzo Mhlongo, Tongaat Hulett’s Socio-Economic Development Manager.

‘It was the first event held in the Nzuza Tribal Council and we applaud Mr Gumede for having brought the community closer through this initiative,’ Inkosi Nzuza said,

He added that Tongaat Hulett had made a significant investment towards the lives of the young learners and encouraged them to steer away from activities that could negatively impact their growth and education.
