Strengthening bonds to stop crime in Empangeni

An important meeting between Empangeni police and private security companies will take place this afternoon in Empangeni

IT has long been argued that the South African Police Service (SAPS) cannot deal with the high rate of crime plaguing society.

Hence, South Africa’s private security sector is among the largest in the world, with more than 9 000 registered companies.

Bridging the gap between public and private entities has long been touted as an effective means of providing better services to the public.

Considering that Zululand is a breeding ground for criminal activity, immense pressure has been put on police in the region to curb crime and ensure the safety of communities.

A mere glance at statistics published by Crime Stats SA confirms this.

In 2015 there were 6 867 recorded cases of crime in the Empangeni, Ngwelezana and Matshana areas.

This figure increased to 7 696 criminal cases recorded in last year.

eShowe and Richards Bay were also highlighted as crime hot spots.

This afternoon new Station Commander at the Empangeni SAPS, Brigadier Jeros Thango, will attempt to engage with private security company stakeholders in the area to create a better working relationship between the parties.

Forming part of one the many plans he has for the area to restore peace to society, Thango has his work cut out for him.

While his vast experience will work in his favour, Thango highlighted the importance of having support from the general public, Amakhosis and private security companies in the region.
