Richards Bay lifeguards receive royal gift from Monaco
The two new malibu boards will go a long way to helping Richards Bay lifeguards carry out their duties
RICHARDS Bay lifeguards were counted among the beneficiaries of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation as they, along with every lifesaving club in South Africa, last week received a donation of two malibu boards.
The boards were handed over at an event in Umhlanga, at which Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco was appointed patron of Lifesaving SA.
‘We are ecstatic to have received the donation of two malibu boards, which will go a long way to aiding us in our lifesaving work,’ said Richards Bay Beach Manager Shakes Hiraman.
‘It is a great honour for me to be named patron of Lifesaving SA, an organisation that shares the same vision as my foundation, and one that I have always been inspired by,’ said Princess Charlene at the event.
‘Lifesaving SA’s commitment to drowning prevention is remarkable and the spirit of volunteering that it instills in our young people is infectious.’
Established in 2012, the foundation’s primary aim is to save lives by preventing drowning.
Its mission is to raise public awareness of the dangers of water, teach children preventative measures and teach them to swim.
The foundation has particularly concentrated its efforts on Princess Charlene’s native South Africa, where drowning rates among children are very high.
Learn to Swim is one of the programmes run by the foundation, which focuses on teaching water safety, including basic dry-side water safety, to children in rural areas.
