MY STORY: ‘I stole my father’s gun and my whole life changed’

'But at some point I realised crime doesn’t pay and I started re-evaluating my life and would often think of my grandmother who always told me I would remember her one day when I was all alone. And I remembered her’

HIS whole life changed when at the tender age of 15, he was arrested for murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

For a Zululand parolee, the journey to redemption has been a difficult one after he was slapped with a 15-year sentence for a crime he wished he had never committed.

Now in his late 20s and in hindsight, he admits that his grandmother’s life lessons were his saving grace and prompted his turnaround.

‘I was raised by my grandmother because my mother got married and went to live with her husband. My father lived elsewhere. I lived with a lot of anger inside of me because I didn’t live with my parents and I didn’t have the same things other children at school had.

‘I was resentful and had a very short temper. I began doing drugs and smoking weed and my friends and I would break into shops and steal things. I was getting out of hand and no one could control me,’ he told the ZO.

He said an incident in 2004 was the one that landed him in prison, where he was to serve a 15-year sentence.

‘I had people at school that I did not get along with. So when I visited my father, I stole his gun and I took it to a school function with me. A conflict ensued with those guys and that is when my life changed.’
