Hluhluwe lions recaptured after escaping

A low flying helicopter was used to aid the recapture process and all eight lions were safely returned to the park this afternoon

EIGHT lions from Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park (HiP) were successfully recaptured in the early hours of this morning after having escaped yesterday afternoon.

KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife immediately began tracking the lions after it was discovered that three lioness and five cubs had escaped from HiP.

By sunset yesterday the escaped lions had not been recaptured.

The search continued this morning when Ezemvelo received reports that the lions that had been sighted near Hlabisa.

Field Rangers then began the process of recapturing them.

A low flying helicopter was used to aid the recapture process and all eight lions were safely returned to the park by 12pm this afternoon.

An investigation, launched by Ezemvelo, confirmed that three cows had been killed by the lions.

Ezemvelo has agreed to compensate the owners of the cows in due course.
