Neighbouring South 32 employees went into invacuation mode as a precaution when the alarm sounded
According to the Richards Bay Clean Air Association (RBCAA) Communications Officer, Sandy Camminga, Foskor confirmed the incident.
‘RBCAA yesterday requested Foskor to respond to reports of an alarm on Monday night owing to a gas leak.
‘Foskor has responded confirming their alarm activation, and that a statement will be issued shortly.

‘In the interim the RBCAA has confirmed with the City’s Fire & Rescue Services that they received an automatic alarm notification from Foskor, reportedly due to an ammonia leak, but the City’s emergency services were reportedly not required as Foskor personnel had dealt with the situation.
‘Given the nature of processes at Foskor, and the facility’s Major Hazardous Installation status, any report of an alarm activation raises concern and highlights the need for the City’s Disaster Management Plan to include an effective public notification and evacuation strategy,’ said Camminga.
