Hunt on for corrupt municipal officials

Officials found guilty of corruption, fraud or financial crimes, may not work for a municipality for a period of 10 years.

THE civil rights organisation, AfriForum, has won a court order by which the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has to submit the names of employees of all 278 municipalities across South Africa who were dismissed for misconduct or who resigned before the conclusion of disciplinary processes.

AfriForum Community Portfolio Manager Ivan Herselman says,’In terms of legislation, officials found guilty of corruption, fraud or financial crimes, may not work for a municipality for a period of 10 years.

‘The court order will enable us to find out who they are and if they work for municipalities.

‘If they are still employed, we will have them removed from their posts,’ said Herselman,

AfriForum will compare the names with current organograms of municipalities where they have branches and determine whether these people are still employed.

AfriForum will also request updated lists every term.

‘We will be able to determine who had resigned before the disciplinary processes could be finalised, and then re-surfaced later on.

‘We will watch these individuals and make sure they don’t get the opportunity to carry on with their practices,’ Herselman said.

South Africans who would like to join their local AfriForum branch and stand up against irregularities in their local government structures, can sms the name of their town to 31336.

There is a 50c charge per SMS.
