SO, you have just left the showroom in a brand new, shiny car and you are on the highway of motoring happiness, but is it okay to put foot right away?
Speaking to service managers at some of Zululand’s big dealerships, they all say the same, that engines and the way they are made have changed a lot over the past 30 years.
Nowadays engines get ‘run in’ at the factory, before they are fitted into the cars, so there is no reason to drive like an old lady for the first 1000 or 1500km.
But that also doesn’t mean that you can rev it until it screams like a cat being slaughtered from the very first day.
The service managers all agree that if you drive the car in a decent and civilised manner, the engine, gearbox and other crucial parts will last much longer, and while it’s not necessary to drive at a snail’s pace with a new car, it makes sense not to constantly push it to the limit, regardless of its age.
Look after it and treat it with respect.
In the long run a bit of mechanical consideration will save you a lot of money.
