Umfolozi students learn footwear manufacturing skills

College student learn the skill of leather work

UMFOLOZI TVET College students are now walking tall after taking advantage of a footwear manufacturing programme at the eNseleni campus.

Forty-five students from eNseleni, Mzingazi and eSikhaleni completed a three month training course, teaching them the art of manufacturing leather footwear.

The programme was headed by Durban-based company Zethu Shoes with the purpose to empower local youth.

They learned how to produce leather products such as shoes, belts and bags.

The students will soon receive their certificates.

According to the college, the project was initiated by coordinator Sifiso Magwaza, who applied for accreditation and assisted the team to gather study material.

‘This is a unique programme offered at the eNseleni campus which boasts a shoe factory. It was quite interesting to learn about the process of shoe manufacturing. Local youth have a lot of hidden skills that need to be uncovered and projects like these are of great benefit,’ said Magwaza.

According to Magwaza the college has approached Woolworths officials with the hope of supplying the chain with their product.

‘We hope this will yield positive results as the shoes are of high quality.’

‘Students who did exceptionally well in the first intake will be used to assist in training the next intake of students.’

Magwaza said while some students will be absorbed by Zethu Shoes, some will be placed in factories in Durban for practical exposure.
