Have you named your Facebook legacy contact?

You can now select a loved one to manage your Facebook account once you have passed on

EVER wondered what would happen to your social media accounts in the unfortunate event of your untimely passing?

With Facebook Legacy, you can nominate a loved one to manage parts of your account by ‘memorialising’ it, or delete your account entirely.

Launched in 2015 in the USA, the tool allows your legacy contact to write a post detailing your memorial service, update your profile and cover photos, respond to new friend requests and download an archive of your profile posts and photos.

They would also be able to alter your profile page by including the word ‘remembering’ before your name.

With access to only a portion of your profile, your Facebook executor would not be able to log in as you, change your account settings or see your private messages.

Your legacy contact could, however, permanently delete your account.

To select a legacy contact, simply go to security settings on your profile, select ‘legacy contact’ from the list and follow the prompts.

Facebook previously offered a basic memorialised account which, in the event of the account holder’s death, left the account as is, but there was no provision for someone to manage it.

The upgraded legacy tool came about as a result of various court rulings over whether or not

Facebook could be legally ordered to give family members access to a lost loved one’s account.

In 2013, Google introduced their Inactive Account Manager to let account holders determine what happens to their Google profiles and storage drives once the account holder has passed on.
