This was the first time that the learners were exposed to cattle judging and they were better prepared for the Royal Show where they participated in the Royal Agricultural Society Challenge Cup.
This competition sees KZN agricultural colleges, universities and high schools competing against each other.
Hoër Landbouskool Vryheid won the super steer category.

Show carcass champion
Msweli’s Bonsmara went on to be be named the champion beef carcass at the Royal Show and was sold to Kevin Joseph, executive head chef of the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga for R70/kg.
The current market price is R46/kg.

The animal was bought from Nealis Ferreira, of Ferrero Bonsmaras from Harrismith.
This is recognised as the top steer trophy at the Royal Show and was a great achievement considering this is the first time the learners have participated under the leadership of Sizwe Mthethwa of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
