THURSDAY evening’s touch rugby league saw the most awaited game of the season live up to all expectations when the top two men’s sides took each other on.
The RBCT Baby Blacks team (Empangeni) beat the Black Ferns (Richards Bay) side 1-0 in a vital game in which log points were at a premium leading into the finals on Saturday.
The 20th annual McCarhty Toyota touch rugby tournament saw the top guns tied at half-time.
But speedster Kobus Duvenhage crossed the whitewash for the RBCT Baby Blacks side to steal the win.
With such intense rivalry between the two sides, spectators and fellow players were treated to sensational rugby which saw many a step and dive which showed the commitment of each player on the park.
What is great to see is that in the ladies section, 2012 wooden spoonists Bar Rangers are currently sitting in fourth place, whilst Mean Machines are in third place.
One of last year’s favourites, Ninjas, find themselves at the bottom of the log, which proves how much the league is growing.
‘With the competition intensifying in the ladies league, there’s no easy game. This is encouraging and great to see now that the competition is evenly spread,’ said Bar Ranger captain Danielle Schulze.
Unfortunately the referring needs to improve as certain referees are costing teams games.
