Manguzi operations reap results

Police in the uMhlabuyalingana Municipality have heeded calls of curbing criminal activity in the area

FOLLOWING President Jacob Zuma’s recent visits to Manguzi and the announcement of a R92-million upgrade of the Manguzi police station, police in the uMhlabuyalingana Municipality have heeded calls of curbing criminal activity in the area.

Prior to his Freedom Day speech at the Manguzi sport complex last month, President Zuma met with angry Manguzi community members to discuss crime in the area.

Cross-border crime was highlighted and the community told the President that if something was not done, they would have no choice but to take the law into their own hands.

Police on Monday, together with the assistance of the Tactical Response Team deployed at the Kosi Bay border, proceeded to a house at KwaGeorge, Manguzi, where they arrested two brothers suspected to be responsible for the robbery at a Kosi Bay Lodge on 5 May.

Three men armed with firearms and pangas entered the lodge and demanded cash and firearms.

They took six firearms, cellphones, cash and other items..

The brothers were found in possession of six unlicensed firearms, which included three pistols, a revolver, a 308 hunting rifle, a shotgun and 42 rounds of ammunition.

They were also found in possession of an Ipad, cellphones, jewellery and other items believed to have been taken during the robbery.

The suspects, aged 26 and 35, are charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, armed robbery and possession of stolen property.

They appeared in the Emanguzi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and were remanded into custody to allow for further investigation.

On Tuesday, 9 May, the team deployed in the uMkhanyakude area acted on intelligence with regards to a stolen Toyota Hilux double cab..

Police officers spotted the vehicle heading towards the border and a chase ensued.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle was stolen in Pretoria earlier this month.
