Heavy rains delay telephone line repairs

Telkom said last weekend's heavy rains has caused a delay in the repairing of two broken underground cables

EMPANGENI residents and businesses battling without functioning phones for weeks, will have to wait longer before services will be fully restored.

Telkom said last weekend’s heavy rains have caused damage and a delay in the repairing of two broken underground cables.

‘Our technical team has prioritised this matter, but dry conditions are required to repair the fault,’ Telkom said.

Last week the company said a major water pipe burst caused damage to the cables.

‘We currently have two underground cable breaks in Empangeni. This break was caused by a major water pipe that burst and saturated both cables.

‘The Municipality had to first repair the broken pipe before Telkom could locate and begin repair to the damaged cables.’

The municipality repaired the pipe on 9 May.

One of the cables was expected to be replaced by last week Monday and services running on the second cable were expected to be fully restored by Friday.

The delay in getting services back up has irked residents and business owners.

‘This is really bad for businesses,’ said a business owner, who has been without working phones for weeks.
