Children seriously injured after jumping off a moving bakkie

The eight boys thought they were being abducted

EIGHT young boys hoping to catch a lift to the Shembe Church in Birdswood, on Monday had a hitch-hiking experience from hell when the motorist refused to stop the vehicle.

Terrified that they were being abducted, the youngsters, estimated to be around 10 or 11 years of age, jumped from the back of the moving bakkie just before entering Mandlazini.

The driver of the bakkie did not stop.

Two of the children sustained serious head injuries and one minor injuries.

They were rushed to the Mandlazini Clinic by ICE Medical Rescue services.

This incident occurred only five days after a law banning the transport of children for reward in the goods compartment of a vehicle was implemented by the Department of Transport.
