Richards Bay CPF and Mandlazini Sports Committe fighting drug abuse through sport
Richards Bay CPF Chairperson Robert Mbuyazi said the drug situation is spiralling out of control at an alarming rate across the country

IN an effort to address the rampant local drug abuse problem, the Richards Bay Community Policing Forum and Mandlazini Sports Committee recently teamed up to host a sports day and substance abuse awareness campaign at Mandlazini Agri Village.
Richards Bay CPF Chairperson Robert Mbuyazi said the drug situation is spiralling out of control at an alarming rate across the country, and communities had to unite to fight the problem.
The collaborative effort of facilitating different sport codes such as football, netball and indigenous games for the Madlazini youth is aimed at encouraging the youth to get involved in sport rather than falling into the trap of criminal activity and substance abuse.
Local stakeholders such as SAPS Richards Bay, LifeLine Zululand, the Department of Sports and Recreation, Department of Health, Madlazini CPF Youth Desk and the Madlazini Taxi Association also supported the campaign.
Mbuyazi said the event exposed youngsters to life skills such as team building, problem solving, communication and organising skills.
‘Drugs will always be a problem in every community, but it is of crucial importance how the community responds and how quick the efforts are in reducing this problem of drugs.
‘If we sit back and do nothing, then surely we are heading for disaster, but if we develop a unified strategy engaging all role players, then we can make headway.
‘We need a special prevention campaign to be run in all schools and tertiary institutions,’ said Mbuyazi.
