Mandeni Mayor calls for culture and learning

Calls to improve matric pass rate

A CULTURE of teaching and learning in Ilembe District schools needs to be improved as a matter of urgency to bounce back from last year’s disappointing matric pass rate.

This was the opinion of Mandeni Mayor Sphesihle Zulu during his unannounced visit to his former school uDumo High last week.

Zulu’s visit was linked to a massive clean-up campaign which started at Khayalemfundo LP School in Ward 13 and ended at uDumo High in Ward 14.

Zulu said he was concerned about the standard of education in most schools in the Ilembe District.

‘As Councillors we decided to pay visits to all our former schools with the intention of enhancing the matric pass rate, which continues to deteriorate in this district.

‘As a former student here, it pains me to see the deterioration. I plead with all of you learners and educators to strive for the best.

‘You must devote yourself from Grade 8 if you want to make it in matric. I also want to assure you that the Mandeni Municipality will provide support in as far as bursary programmes are concerned,’ Zulu said.

‘Remember that real life begins at school and you must ensure that every subject you do paves the way for you to enroll at tertiary institutions. I also want to appeal to you all to refrain from damaging activities such as drugs and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancies and gambling.

‘You are not here to create babies and those who are taking drugs should know that a school is not a rehabilitation centre.’

Zulu said his municipality will hire a researcher who will be responsible for channelling learners to the right courses and skills required in the job market.

‘The researcher will collaborate with the uMfolozi TVET College and iSithebe Industrial Park in this regard.’
