Punitive city road taxes jeopardise development

PUNITIVE road tax levies of up to millions of rands imposed by the uMhlathuze Municipality are deterring potential developers and investors and are likely to have a serious negative impact on local economic growth.
Criticism of the heavy levies has again been brought to the fore with the development of a psychiatric hospital in the city now in jeopardy because of this.
According to the developer, Bothas Incorporated’s Lucas Landman, the demanded fee of R15-million, from a previous R2.3-million, would not make the intended 36-bed hospital in Empangeni financially viable.
