Rural cane farmers complain about drought

Blame is being placed on government

SUGAR cane farmers of KwaMthethwa Reserve are feeling the pressure of the drought as they fail to produce good crops in their fields.

Blame is being placed on government . One of the farmers, Mantunganye Mthethwa, said they are still waiting for the Deputy Minister of Fishing and Forest Bheki Cele to back to them to fulfill promises he made during a meeting held at KwaMthethwa last year.

He said, as many in the community are unemployed, they want government to come and help them in terms of the rural economy.

His word to the Department of Agriculture was that many youth in the area are unemployed and sugar cane plays a vital role for them and their families.

Speaker of uMfolozi Municipality, Zakhele Mfusi confirmed that as the municipality their duty is merely to provide services, while the Department must come down to discuss the cane growing issue with the farmers.
