KwaDukuza remembers struggle icon

Uncle Kathy had a close relationship with iNkosi Luthuli

THE Kwadukuza Municipality Council has paid tribute to late anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Kathrada, describing him as a distinguished leader who played a pivotal role in politics at the height of apartheid.

Speaking at Kathrada’s memorial service held last week at SADTU Park in KwaDukuza, Mayor Ricardo Mthembu said the freedom fighter played an exemplary role in the democratic parliament together with late President Nelson Mandela.

‘We are gathered here to remember a struggle stalwart whose political work added more chapters to the good story that South Africa has been able to tell since the dawn of democracy.

‘The story of Uncle Kathy should be aptly narrated with the mention of other struggle icons such as Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Debi Singh, Govan Mbeki and others who were with him on Robben Island.

‘Kathrada distinguished himself through active political participation and action.’

Mthembu described Kathrada as a great man who illuminated so much light to the world through his humanitarian work.

‘That should teach us about the future that we need to build as citizens. We are also meeting here, just a few kilometers away from the home of the first African Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Inkosi Albert Luthuli.

‘This is another struggle hero who had a close relationship with Uncle Kathy and held a number of secret visits even here at Luthuli’s Groutville home.

‘As we celebrate Kathrada’s lifelong journey, we should not lose sight of the future and the challenges that we face.’

Mthembu shared the podium with member of the KZN Legislature, Yusuf Bamjee.
