A FOLLOW-UP meeting to monitor progress of resolving issues in King DinuZulu by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, was held last Wednesday.
After the meeting Kaunda said he was satisfied with the progress by the uMlalazi Municipality in addressing the community’s concerns.
A week of violent public protests brought the town to a standstill.
Key among the complaints raised by the community was the removal of the contractor appointed to upgrade the King DiniZulu bus route, who failed to meet stipulated deadlines.
Other issues included the lack of refuse removal and illegal dumping sites.
Kaunda said he was pleased that a contractor has been appointed and allocated a period of three months to complete the work with a budget of R18-million.
The deadline has now been set for the end of June.
The municipality has increased the number of open skips in the suburb to assist with refuse removal and has identified illegal dumping sites.
‘We have been given an assurance by the municipality that they will work with the local councillor to develop a programme to clean illegal dumping sites,’ said Kaunda.
He appealed to the members of the community to ensure the contractor completes the work without any hindrance.
‘Police will also continue to maintain visibility in the area until we are satisfied that there is peace and stability in the area.’
