WATCH: ZO features on eNCA’s Maggs on Media

The Zululand Observer, recently named ‘Caxton Newspaper of the Year’, featured prominently on popular media current affairs programme

THE Zululand Observer, recently named Caxton Newspaper of the Year’, featured prominently on popular media current affairs programme – Maggs on Media with host Jeremy Maggs this week.

The crucial role that community newspapers play in the media industry was highlighted with GM Local Media Metropolitans for Caxton, Karen Watts reiterating the important link that community newspapers share with the communities it serves.

She said that community newspapers were often seen as a ‘mouthpiece, voice and heartbeat’ of a community being at the forefront of among others service delivery campaigns as well as tackling municipal corruption and green issues.

Elaborating on the annual Caxton Excellence Awards, of which the ZO came out tops, Watts said the winning publications reflected the diverse communities it served, focusing on core issues affecting their readers.

Offering relevant hyperlocal ‘news that you can use’ content that affected your everyday life, Watts said community newspapers had also made great gains digitally. Out of 148 newspapers with 78 websites, Caxton publications’ websites recorded 5 million uniques and 12 million pageviews for March alone.

Praising the news hounds that served their communities, Watts said there was a larger emphasis on creating great and passionate journos who cared for their communities. The aim was to package great community news which marketers saw as a valuable proposition.
