Striking social development workers disrupt SASSA operations

THINGS came to a head this morning at the Lower Umfolozi Social Development offices in Empangeni when NEHAWU affiliated employees closed the entrance to the offices.

Throngs of people who arrived to apply for government grants and pensions were prevented from entering the premises by the angry employees, until police dispersed them.

The irate workers burnt tyres and wood in front of the already closed gate, leaving the social development customers stranded outside.
The employees are unhappy about salary negotiations currently taking place between the government and the unions.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer, a Public Servants Association representative said the three-week long protest was postponed after the engagements that took place between the government and the unions on Friday and Monday.

‘The talks will resume again on 8 April. In the meantime we are going to continue with the protests until the negotiations are concluded,’ he stressed.
